Who benefits from sleep or sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an ideal option for you if you have anxiety at the dentist. This may include a fear of having sensitive teeth, a gag reflux, difficulty becoming numb from anaesthetic, or long appointments.

Can I use sedation dentistry for any procedure?

Sedation dentistry can be used for any procedure although it is uncommon for getting dental hygiene appointments completed. If you experience extreme anxiety, scale and cleans may be completed with the assistance of sedation. Sedation is commonly used during procedures like general dentistry, root canal treatment, teeth extractions (wisdom teeth removals especially), and dental implants.

Am I suitable for sleep dentistry?

Almost anyone can be suitable for sleep dentistry. Certain health conditions such as obesity or sleep apnoea can heighten the risk of a complications and as such, we will discuss your medical history thoroughly prior to you undergoing sedation treatment.

What are my options for sedation?

Option 1- Mild sedation

Mild sedation is achieved through use of a pill such as Valium. Tablets are usually taken one hour prior to dental treatment and this allows you to be relaxed although still awake during your treatment.

Option 2 – Conscious sedation

Sometimes called twilight sedation, conscious sedation is a moderate level of sedation that is used for people with higher levels of anxiety and for major treatment. IV sedation allows you to become deeply relaxed and very sleepy during your procedure although technically you are awake.

Option 3 – General anaesthesia

General anaesthesia is usually done in a hospital setting and used for more extreme cases. For many people, a lesser form of sedation is enough for a pain-free dental experience. This option will completely put you to sleep and you will not remember the procedure at all

Can I drive to and from my appointment?

During sedation dentistry, you are not allowed to drive yourself to and from your appointment. We recommend that someone who is close to you like your family or friend drive you to the appointment and pick you up after the treatment.

How much does sleep dentistry cost?

Fees for sleep dentistry will vary depending on the type of sedation given. Fees start from $50 and go all the way up to $2,000 depending on the complexity of treatment and your health insurance.
